Differences Between a Tax Deduction and Tax Credit

Tax Deduction

Deductions that lower your total taxable income.

Itemization is an option, though most people opt for the standard deduction.

Adjusted prior to applying the tax rate.

The higher your income, the more significant a deduction becomes.

Tax Credit

Lowers your tax bill by counterbalancing the amount you owe.

Every $1 contributed usually reduces taxes owed by $1.

Adjusted after the tax due is determined.

Certain credits are refundable, meaning they can not only reduce your tax bill to zero but also increase your tax refund.
